André Moisan

Bass clarinet and saxophone solo, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal
André Moisan

Clarinettist and saxophonist with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, André Moisan is recognized for the purity and clarity of his playing, the richness of his tone, and the eclecticism of his repertoire. For several decades, he has maintained an active career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer, moving seamlessly between classical music, jazz, and contemporary creation.

He studied with Robert Crowley in Montreal, Victor Sawa in Kitchener, Larry Combs in Chicago, and Karl Leister in Berlin, and began learning the clarinet at the age of ten with his father, Gilles Moisan, who was a member of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal for 46 years.

Since 1999, André Moisan has held the positions of principal saxophone and bass clarinet with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.

Alongside his performing career, he has been dedicated to teaching as a professor at the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal since 1989.

His discography as a soloist and chamber musician includes more than seventy recordings, among them thirteen solo and chamber music albums released on the ATMA Classique label, all of which have been acclaimed by the international press

  • In tribute to the great jazz musicians “I have great respect for clarinetists such as Benny Goodman and many others who inspired composers to cross the boundary between jazz and the more ‘classical’ world, leading to the emergence of a new genre.” – André Moisan

    AFTER YOU, MR. GERSHWIN!
  • “Impressions de France is a reissue of a 1996 recording by clarinetist André Moisan. The album carries an air of exhilaration, stemming first from the clarinetist’s encounter with composer Jean Françaix, then aged 84, and from the rediscovery of the original manuscript of Claude Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie. Without the alterations introduced by its dedicatee, Paul Mimart, this version represents a first recording of the work. Even before its release, the album had already gained at least one admirer: in a letter, Jean Françaix found no fault with it and concluded, ‘It is often said that perfection does not belong to this world; in this case, that is entirely untrue. Everything is expressed exactly as I wished: the rhythm, the poetry, the irony…’”
